Roger Federer, the legendary Tennis GOAT, gave a thoughtful and inspiring commencement address at Dartmouth University over the weekend. He shared insightful wisdom with three lessons on how to approach a no baselines life.
Hard Work is Key: Federer emphasized that success is not solely based on talent. "The truth is I had to work very hard to make it look easy. Effortless is a myth. I didn't get where I got on pure talent alone. I got there by trying to outwork my opponents".
It's Only a Point: To manage loss and disappointment, Federer offered this perspective: "You want to become a master at overcoming hard moments. That is, to me, the sign of a champion". He shared a striking statistic: in his 1,526 singles matches, he won 80% of the matches but only 54% of the points played.
Life is Bigger than the Court: Federer stressed the importance of exploring beyond one's comfort zone. "Tennis could show me the world but tennis could never be the world," he said, encouraging graduates to embrace new experiences.
Federer concluded by reminding the graduates of their potential: "You are future record breakers, world travelers, future volunteers and philanthropists, future winners, and future leaders".
